About moi!
I grew up in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, tagging along on car rides with my mom to Paper Mill Playhouse for work. My heart was immersed in performing before I fully understood where it might lead. Adopted into a family of theatre, I was surrounded by artists who welcomed me into their world with open arms. I grew up in audiences and rehearsal rooms, watching performers who showed me the power of storytelling and the way theatre can make you feel inspired. Being brought along to watch their work shaped not only my love for the stage, but my sense of belonging within it. I strive to be part of work that resonates, connects, and leaves someone in the audience feeling the way I once did and still do.
Maya Jean has vivid memories of placing herself into the roles of the classic musicals she grew up watching. As a young artist, she imagined herself inside those worlds, even when she rarely saw performers who looked like her reflected in them. Now, she has gone on to defy those traditions, stepping into those very roles herself. She comes from a family who loving calls themselves the “mini United Nations”, a reflection of their multicultural makeup. This foundation fuels her commitment to creating and advocating for diversity in theatre.
